My Office of Tomorrow - 4th edition

December 2020

In September 2020, the Workplace Management Chair launched the fourth edition of the My Office of Tomorrow® survey. Like the previous editions, this survey was carried out among students of the Grande Ecole and the specialized Masters of ESSEC. It allows them to ask questions about their work space experiences - for those who already have professional experience in an office - and their vision of the ideal workspace after leaving school - for everyone.

This fourth edition considers the impacts of the health crisis and the post-containment context on the expectations of future managers regarding their workspaces.

As every year, part of the survey results are published in the press and are the subject of an infographic. This comprehensive report includes a detailed analysis of the lessons learned from student responses.

It is organized around four parts and an annex:

  • The first part deals with the ideal office at the end of school as seen by the students, from the angle of the criteria of choice for their next job, the type of office, as well as the importance of having an assigned workstation. and the importance of the habit of going to the office.
  • The second part is devoted to location and ancillary services. It provides framing elements in terms of location strategy and any compensation to be provided to employees.
  • The third part deals with the ideal office in the post-containment context. She questions the students about their experience of the work experience during the first confinement (for those who have worked), and questions them about their expectations regarding new working methods, in particular teleworking and third places, their expectations in relation to the physical workspace, the ideal type of space, as well as the ideal distribution of their working time, and finally, the location where they would ideally like to work.
  • The fourth part concentrates the cross-tabulations relating to different aspects such as transport time, ideal location, the ideal type of office, teleworking and the essential function of the office in a post-containment world.
  • Finally, an appendix completes the report by detailing the professional experience of the students - more than 80% have one - and aims to understand their professional career as well as their feelings about the different types of workspace.

In this survey, flex office is defined as open space without an assigned office, and coworking is defined as shared workspace outside of company premises. Home office or telecommuting is defined as the daily work from home. As for the shared office, it is defined as being limited to a maximum of 4 people.
